Over the next few years the UK intends to add approximately 30GW of wind energy to a system with a current peak demand of 63GW. With today's generation and storage infrastructure, this additional capacity is expected to cause an intermittent but significant excess of supply over demand, with "zero or negative prices" (in other words energy will be dumped or people will be paid to make use of it!) for approximately 2000 hours per annum by 2020. Isentropic will present a study on how better energy storage can be used to reduce the overall electricity system cost and considers how the optimal storage capacity varies with unit price.
